What's Your Truth

What’s Your Truth?

One of my students brought me to tears the other day. Why? Because she told the truth in her art. She's searching, just beginning and the struggle is real. And she shows it. She's brave and she bares her soul. She's courageous.

I’m a pushover for the truth. I’ll take the truth or authenticity over style every time. Because truth lasts. Style is fleeting.

Look, anyone can learn to be facile.

Facile - what a great word. It has two meanings and I mean both of them here.

Facile, adjective: 1. Easily accomplished or attained. 2. Readily manifested and often lacking sincerity or depth.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you must suffer to make art. Not no but HELL NO! That's not my point at all. What I am saying is that you should tell the truth and then let the chips fall where they may.

Once you tell the truth, your truth, it's none of your business how people react to it. Once the truth is out there, no matter what it looks like, it belongs to the Universe. Keep your mitts off of it.

This may sound like a bunch of high falutin' nonsense. But it's not. The student that made me cry did 25 small pieces on paper in red and white paint. Just red and white paint. About 5" x 7".

What does your truth look like? Pencil lines on pieces of paper? Oil paint on canvas? Bits of fabric glued to lampshades? Dancing in the moonlight?

Whatever it is, find it and share it.

Share your truth. You may bring someone to tears, you never know.
