New in the studio the "Odessa" series.

New In The Studio

It’s always exciting for me to start a new series. This new series is based on what I call “lizard brain” drawing. Technically speaking it’s blind contour drawing. Betty Edwards discusses this technique in her book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” which I highly recommend. In short, you draw on your paper or canvas without looking at what you’re drawing. I set up a complicated still life and draw on my canvas or panel without looking at what is happening on the canvas. I find it extremely soothing and meditative. And addicting… very, very addicting. I could do this for hours.

The series is named after the Russian city where Wassily Kandinsky grew up. I am a rabid Kandinsky fan and I consider him my artistic grandfather. His book “Concerning the Spiritual in Art” is my bible. Being a formalist myself, I find his take on abstraction deeply moving and pertinent to my own work.

Be on the lookout for more in this series!
